Rasam is a South Indian soup.
Preparation time : 20 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes
Serves 4
Ingredients for Rasam:
- ½ cup lentils (toovar daal), washed
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 5 red chillies, whole
- 10 curry leaves
- 1 gm asafetida
- 2 tbsp garlic, crushed
- A pinch of turmeric powder
- 2-3 tomatoes, quartered
- 2-4 peppercorns
- 1 green chilli, deseeded and slit
- ½ cup tamarind pulp
Directions for making Rasam:
- Heat oil in a pan. Saute mustard seeds till they crackle. Add whole red chillies, curry leaves, asafetida and garlic, stir for a few second. Add turmeric, lentils, tomatoes, peppercorns, green chilli, tamarind pulp and salt to taste. Stir in 1 litre of water.
- Bring to a boil and let it simmer until the lentils are mashed.
- Serve hot as a starter or as an accompaniment to a meal.
